In addition to three other works (CNW 355, 356, 358), the present composition for male choir dates from Nielsen's student years and may have been written at the suggestion of his theory teacher, Orla Rosenhoff. The only surviving source is a manuscript dated 4 December 1887. A few years later, Nielsen reworked the melody and included it in his Opus 6 (CNW 121–25).
