Having finished his third symphony and music for the play Hagbarth og Signe, Nielsen started on a concerto for violin and orchestra. Parts of the work were composed in Norway during summer 1911. Back home in Copenhagen, however, the work started to give him trouble which he found challenging but at the same time also inspiring. From mid-November, the work progressed more easily, and on 13 December 1911 he finished the draft. See more about this work at The Royal Library
