Nielsen presumably began working on his first symphony as early as 1889–90. It was only when he had returned from a travel abroad in the summer 1891 that he started concentrating on the project. According to letters to his wife, Nielsen was working on the symphony during the following years. The fair copy was end-dated in January 1894. See more about this work at The Royal Library
