The exact time of composition is unknown, but it was most likely in the years before the publication of Op. 4, when Nielsen according to various sources was engaged with setting music to texts by J.P. Jacobsen. In 1891, Nielsen and his wife named their first child Irmelin after the princess in Jacobsen's poem Irmelin Rose. See more about this work at The Royal Library
