Nielsen's Nærmere Gud til dig (Nearer my God to Thee) was originally composed for a benefit concert after the loss of Titanic on 14 April 1912. He drafted a short score in pencil with a few indications on the instrumentation which he then left to Julius Reesen to complete. The score was finished on 18 May.
